Since ancient times, body massage is being practised in different civilizations to relax the body and mind of the recipient. Body massage types are of tremendous varieties, of which some have become the most popular because of their characteristic of offering enormous advantages.
Acupressure – This traditional Chinese massage is popular all over the world and is connected with acupuncture. Its procedure is simpler than acupuncture, as the points are to be pressed with fingers, elbow or some other device. Deep Tissue Massage – This massage targets the muscles located under the surface of top muscles. It is perfectly good for the patients of continuous aches or some long-term bodily injury or those who have to perform heavy exercises, like athletes. It can also happen that for one or two days, a new pain takes place of the older one. However this massage should not at all be confused with deep pressure massage. Deep Pressure Massage – This massage is given to full body and a strong pressure is used in it. It is not given for a specific complaint. It mainly aims at soothing of whole body. Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage – This is a mixture of eastern and western massages. It does not need unclothing or application of oil. It involves pressure given with foot or part of foot, the pressure being less than that of fingers, elbow etc. It is good for large muscles like thigh muscles. Renowned Olympics champion of America, Dara Torres, found this massage of great help while she was in training. Ayurvedic Massage – This is a massage of Indian origin and based on Ayurvedic system of humors or doshas. People from all over the world go to destinations like Goa or Kerala in India to get this massage done, because it truly rejuvenates the body. Stone Massage – In this massage, heated stones are used to apply pressure and for heating up the body. Sometime oiled stones are also used. These stones are found in rivers which naturally become extremely smooth. The benefit of the stones are to take out the tension from the patient’s body by rendering it the heat, when kept on the back. Swedish Massage – This is an extremely popular massage and also referred to as Classic Massage in the non-English-speaking countries. It uses five styles of strokes, namely effleurage (sliding), petrissage (Kneading), tapotement (tapping), friction and vibration or shaking. It helps the patients of osteoarthritis a lot, because they decrease the pain and stiffness and also brings improvement in the functions of their joints, and it does this only in 8 weeks. It also improves circulation. Traditional Chinese Massage – There are mainly two aspects involved in this, one is Tui Na, which means kneading, stretching and pushing of the muscles and second is Zhi Ya, meaning pressing and pinching of the acupuncture points. Both these have their origin in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Actually, Tui Na is not a massage, but it is a physiotherapy, used for medical purposes, like curing musculoskeletal conditions, diseases, and even major and minor headaches, rather than relaxation. Aromatherapy Massage – This massage is based on the use of scented plant oils, like sandalwood oil, depending on the patient’s requirements. These oils are greatly useful in soothing, pacifying and energizing. Shiatsu – In this massage, originated in Japan, acupuncture points are pressed and released with a particular rhythm, which soothes and rejuvenates the patient’s body . Pregnancy Massage – This massage is greatly popular amongst the pregnant ladies. It reduces swelling, relieves pain and decreases stress and depression. Foot Massage – This is also known as Reflexology and is extremely relaxing, particularly for those who have to stand for the whole day. Body massage types are quite varying, including those which relax some chosen body parts. You just have to identify which type will help you and it will help you for sure.
